Ed Rigney Joins Elite 4 Million Mile Club
Ed Rigney, a Roadway linehaul driver from Memphis, achieved 4 million miles of accident-free driving. A Roadway employee for 33 years, Ed achieved the milestone on August 30, 2001, and enjoyed the following celebration:
During the final leg of his 4 million mile journey, Ed was met and escorted through Memphis traffic by five members of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department motorcycle squad enroute to the Roadway facility.
As he drove through the Roadway gates, he was greeted by family, friends, and fellow employees, including Jim Staley, President & COO. Henry Perry, President, Local 667, also attended the event.
Chief Deputy Don Wright of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department read a proclamation announcing August 30th as "Ed Rigney Day."
Ed received a hand-embroidered leather patch with the 4 million mile logo. Ed's wife of 42 years, Maxine, received a matching jacket with a 4 million mile "navigator" patch.
Ed's emblazoned 4 million mile tractor was on display for the next two months, until his planned retirement at the end of October.
"Ed Rigney is committed to safety," says Joe O'Shields, relay manager. "He cares about his job and his family and when he departs on a trip his main purpose is to return safely. I am proud to have a driver of Ed's caliber at the Memphis relay. There is no doubt he has set a standard for safety to which each of us should strive."
