
Roadway Express is proud to announce that road driver David G. McDonald of Kansas
City, Kan., has been named the 1996 National Truck Driver of the Year by the American
Trucking Associations (ATA) Safety Management Council. The award is sponsored by
Carolina Casualty Insurance Company.
McDonald is one of those rare
professionals who consistently performs
above and beyond the duties of his job
while displaying unflagging dedication,
integrity, and generosity. He has devoted
much of his life not only to professional
driving, but to becoming an ambassador for
the transportation industry, giving back to
the community the best parts of his
knowledge and experience. McDonald
puts in two or three days a month making
the roads safer for everyone by promoting safety and awareness before the media and
speaking at elementary schools, clubs, and civic organizations.
For 31 years, McDonald has plied the long roads of the central plains states, logging a total of more than 2.9 million miles without a preventable accident or a traffic violation. Along the way, he has received many industry and company awards. He is a longtime participant in state truck driving championships and a Kansas Road Team captain. In 1995, after only 91/2 years with Roadway Express, McDonald earned his million-mile patch. The Kansas Motor Carriers Association. He selected McDonald as one of last years drivers of the month and, subsequently, Kansas driver of the year for 1996. McDonald has also been recognized by the U.S. Department of Transportation for his safety practices and professionalism.
"National driver of the year is more than just a safety award," says Safety Management Council member Jim Lewis. "Its an indication that someone has done something truly heroic, someone who really is an outstanding citizen."
ATA safety programs manager Todd Conner adds, "David McDonald is not only an excellent driver but a good overall person. Hes been a great representative for the industry and for Roadway."
McDonald and his wife, Emma, live in Liberty, Mo. Two grown children and a daughter, Christine, live in Springfield, Mo. while son Bryan, daughter-in-law Karen, and granddaughter Kelsey live in Clarence, Mo. A former school board member, McDonald is active at his local church, serves on the cemetery board, and enjoys fishing, woodworking, and golf.
