Safety First: Welcome to the Alphonso Lewis Safety Site A Historic Safety Achievement By Terrence Gilbert, President August 25, 2007 was a historic day for Alphonso Lewis and Roadway. Alphonso, a driver account specialist from our Montgomery, Alabama, service center, achieved a safety milestone no other Roadway driver has accomplished in our 77-year history: He was named Grand Champion at the 2007 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) in Minneapolis. The highest honor given, the Grand Champion title is an extraordinary accomplishment! The title of Grand Champion is awarded to the National Champion who has exhibited the highest skills and professionalism among the nearly 400 drivers competing at the event. Alphonso was the National Champion in the 4-axle class. The Grand Champion award is truly recognition of the driver who is the "best of the best." In honor of his achievement, Alphonso was also awarded the use of the GM vehicle of his choice for three years. A nice touch our corporation provides to a Grand Champion. We had a few other great finishes as Lynn Springer from Portland, Oregon, placed third in the tanker class. And Greg Nauertz and Dave Messmer were part of the Arizona team of drivers awarded the State Team Trophy. We should be extremely proud of the entire Roadway NTDC team. Our team was one of the largest, best trained and most experienced ever. It was an honor to meet and spend time with them. Their hard work, professionalism and commitment to safety paid off during an incredible week devoted to safety. Congratulations to all our 38 state champions, especially to Alphonso, our Grand Champion. |
