Randy DeVault, a pickup and delivery driver from Augusta, Maine, was named Grand Champion at Roadway's second Annual Professional Freight Handlers Competition, held March 24-25, 2003, in Akron, Ohio. Second: Jason Bonnema, a dockworker from Minneapolis. Third: Rodney Newcomb, a driver/dockworker from Portland, Oregon. Highest pre-trip inspection score: Kent Durant, a driver/dockworker from Wichita, Kansas. Highest score on driving course: Jason Bonnema, Minneapolis.
The competition was created by Roadway in 2001 to recognize its 6,000 dedicated professionals working day and night to move our customers' freight safely. Competitors faced four challenges: a written exam, personal interview, pre-trip inspection, and a driving course. To be eligible, dockworkers have to be certified to operate forklifts and have an injury- and accident-free safety record for the twelve-month period immediately preceding. Employees from around the company competed in local and regional run-offs to earn their way to the national competition.
