2003 State Truck Driving Championships Gear Up

The 2003 State Truck Driving Championships have begun! The Arizona State Truck Driving Championships were held April 5th. Dave Salerno earned 1st Place, Flatbed. Greg Nauertz won 1st Place, 3-axle, and received the High Course Score. Nauertz was also the Grand Champion. Best of luck to Dave and Greg at the Nationals in Columbus! Read more

The South Carolina State Truck Driving Championships were held April 25-26th. Jimmy McBeath earned 2nd place, Sleeper. Phil Beck won 2nd place, Tanker. Charlie Goodman attained 3rd place, 3-axle. Steve Hines won 3rd place, Flatbed. Congratulations to everyone that competed and assisted the team.

Safety Milestone Achievers: Gantner, Diehl, Sterenchock

George Gantner, 62, a linehaul driver for Roadway's Columbus, Ohio facility, has logged 3 million miles in 33 years with Roadway, the equivalent of circling the earth's equator 120 times without a preventable accident. Read more

Craig Diehl, 53, a pickup and delivery driver for our Danville, Illinois facility, has logged one million miles in his 18 years with Roadway. Read more

Daniel Sterenchock, a pickup and delivery driver for Roadway's Hazleton, Pennsylvania facility, has logged one million miles in his 16 years with the company. Read more

Roadway's James Carlson: Kansas Driver of the Year

James Carlson, a pickup and delivery driver from Roadway's Salina, Kansas service center, was selected as the Kansas Driver of the Year at the Kansas Motor Carriers Association Safety Awards Banquet on April 23, 2003. James has been with Roadway for 23 years and has been a driver for over 40 years without an accident. This is the first time in the history of the Kansas Driver of the Year competition that a pickup and delivery driver has won the award.

Safety Performance Milestone at Roadway's Charlotte, NC Facility

The Charlotte, North Carolina facility's 23 dock employees have worked three years without an injury. This equates to 114,082 hours worked without an occurrence. The "achievement is a product of a culture change at this facility," stated Dave Hegener, facility manager in Charlotte. "Through the conscious effort of every employee and the activities of the terminal's Accident/Injury Prevention Council, all employees think safety first. They are very proud of their accomplishment and continue to work toward extending their injury-free record to four years."

2003 America's Road Team Members

Roadway's two professional drivers, Charon Rae Crites and James F. Wages, were named Captains of the 2003 America's Road Team of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) sponsored by Volvo. Crites, of the Bloomington, CA Roadway facility, and James F. Wages, from the Memphis, TN relay will join 11 representatives from other trucking companies throughout the United States. These "Best-of-the-Best" drivers will spend approximately one week each month traveling throughout the country making presentations to civic organizations, media representatives, truck stops and driver's education classes on safely sharing the road with commercial vehicles. These drivers will also have the opportunity to testify on trucking and safety issues before Congressional hearings and at the state government level.
