With only two states yet to hold their state championships, so far a total of 34 Roadway drivers have qualified for the National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) to be held in Tampa, FL.
These 34 drivers placed first in their respective state driving competitions. Several earned special recognitions along with their state titles.
Grand champion honors went to: Alphonso Lewis, Montgomery, AL; Marty E. Lyons, Kansas City, KS; Bill MacDonald, Bellows Falls, VT; Butch Miller, Sioux Falls, SD; Anthony J. Remesch, Danville, IL; Timothy J. Smith, Salt Lake City, UT.
Team trophies went to Roadway drivers competing at the Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, and Wisconsin events.
Top-score written test awards went to: William Durant, Wichita, KS; and John C. Miller, Winston-Salem, NC.
Michael Rafeal, Concord, NH was named driver of the year. Best pre-trip inspection went to Michael Rafeal of Concord, NH. Eric E. Radkey of Portland, OR was named rookie of the year.

Roadway's Elwin T. "Slim" Pickens (Meridian, MS) has achieved a career milestone of driving FOUR million consecutive miles without a preventable accident. That's the mammoth equivalent of circling the earth's equator 160 times. "Slim" began driving for Roadway in 1972.
In addition, ten Roadway drivers have also achieved career milestones by reaching THREE million miles without a preventable accident: Louis Armstrong (Memphis, TN); James L. Banner (Chicago Heights, IL); Larry J. Conmay (Dallas, TX); Garrett Giarrusso (Houston, TX);
George J. Greer (Oklahoma City, OK); Russell E. Holcomb (Cincinnati, OH); Robert C. Lantzer (Dallas, TX); James A. Pierce (Nashville, TN); Charles E. Reed (Meridian, MS); Harold A. White, Jr. (Springfield, MO).
