First-Time Shipper A Basic Guide to Shipping How Your Shipment Moves The person on the other end of the line is a Roadway express dispatcher at the Kearny, New Jersey service center. He quickly arranges for a driver to pick up the shipment.
Arriving at the customers’ dock, the Roadway Pickup & Delivery driver verifies the shipment of pencils with its Bill of Lading (BOL). The BOL is a legal contract between the shipper and Roadway, and serves two purposes. It gives Roadway temporary possession of the goods and provides instructions on what is to be done with the freight.
Once the driver returns to the local New Jersey service center with the pencil load, he hands his Bill of Lading to a dispatcher or supervisor.
The pencils’ next stop is Roadway’s large consolidation and distribution center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The pencils are moved to the “outbound” side of the center and are combined with other freight moving in the same direction.
