Other Services Available at Reasonable Fees

Automobiles: Rated at a minimum weight of 6,000 pounds.

Household goods and personal effects: Rated at a minimum weight of 500 pounds.

Low-density freight: If your shipment occupies 750 cubic feet or more of our trailer with an actual density of less than 4 pounds per cubic foot, the freight charges are subject to a cubic capacity charge rule.

Dimensional weight: Shipments moving via Time-Critical or Roadway Air are billed at the greater of actual or dimensional weight. Shipments will be assessed on the basis of one pound per 194 cubic inches or fraction thereof (Length x Width x Height/ 194 equals dimensional weight). When calculating cubic feet, certain packaged shipping units are considered 84 inches in height even though their actual height is less.
These include:

  • Pallets, skids, or cartons banded or shrink-wrapped into a single unit which are pyra-mided, rounded, or topped off.
  • Units that have an irregularly shaped top, such as machinery.
  • Units marked that no other freight is to be loaded on top.

Roadway calculates the minimum charge for low-density freight by multiplying total cubic feet, or portion thereof, by 6 pounds, then multiplying the result by the applicable Class 77.5 rate, but the minimum charge is not more than the charge as provided in Item 390 (Capacity Load). When your regular charge produces a higher charge, the charges in this rule do not apply. The minimum and maximum charge deter-mined by this calculation are not eligible for a discount.

Extreme Configurations

If your shipment needs 20 or more lineal feet of space in our trailer and exceeds 3.5 feet inheight and 3.5 feet in width, Roadway considers it an article of extreme configuration. We calculate the minimum rate for such items by multiplying each lineal foot, or portion thereof, by 420 pounds, then multiplying this computed weight times the applicable rate, not to exceed Class 150 (the actual weight will apply if greater). Shipments exceeding 27 feet, 3 inches but not more than 3.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet high are subject to an additional charge. If any article in a shipment requires more than 27 lineal feet, 3 inches of space to be loaded, an additional charge will apply per shipment, not subject to discount.

Minimum Charge Capacity Load

If your shipment creates the maximum legal weight on our trailer or if an additional unit of the largest item in the shipment would not fit on the trailer (even if an additional unit is not tendered as part of the shipment), we consider your shipment a capacity load. Each pup, doubles, 45-foot, or 48-foot trailer will be subject to a per mile minimum charge.

Released and Actual Value

Actual value—When tariff or NMFC items require actual value declarations by the con-signor on the bill of lading at the time of shipment and carrier receives the shipment without such declarations, the shipment will be rated at the highest value unless the tariff or NMFC item has its own rule.

Corrected bills of lading—These will be accepted based on the actual value with proof of actual value.

Claim application—In case of loss or damage to a portion of the contents of a shipping package, the amount recoverable will be the released value per pound or item multiplied by the gross weight of each item, not the weight of the package or the entire shipment, but not more than the actual loss or damage.

Maximum liability—In the event of loss, damage, or delay to any commodities, released value or otherwise, carrier’s liability will not exceed twenty-five dollars ($25) per pound per package, subject to a maximum liability of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) per shipment, whichever is lower, unless the consignor has requested excess liability cover-age at the time of shipment. In no case will carrier’s liability exceed the actual value of the property.

Shipments subject to released value are not eligible for extra cargo loss protection.
Certain tariff items may further restrict Roadway’s liability. Please contact your local customer service center if you have any questions.

Released value—Corrected bill of lading will not be accepted involving released values.

Shipments with mixed released values—When a shipment consists of commodities subject to released value and some packages are released to different values and/or some are not released at all, the packages and the bill of lading must be clearly marked at the time of shipment to identify the value of “Each Package.”
In lieu of showing the specified information on the bill of lading, the carrier may be furnished with a manifest at the time of shipment which clearly identifies the packages which are released and the released value of each.

Failure to comply with the above criteria will make all of the packages subject to the lowest released value.
