Roadway driver Alphonso Lewis was presented with a dedicated, personalized tractor at a celebration at the Birmingham, AL, service center this past October. The celebration was held in honor of Alphonso's success at the 2007 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC).
Alphonso was named National Champion in the 4-axle class and subsequently chosen from among nearly 400 drivers as the NTDC's 2007 Grand Champion--the highest honor bestowed upon a professional driver.
John Sypek, vice president-operations, and Jim LeClaire, southeast division vice president, presented a Volvo tractor personalized with Alphonso's name and achievement. Alphonso will drive the personalized tractor on his daily pickup and delivery route in the Montgomery, AL area.
Alphonso's Grand Champion title also earned him a new vehicle for his personal use. When he's not at work, Alphonso will be driving a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe given to him on a 3-year lease by YRC Worldwide, parent corporation of Roadway.
Alphonso thanked Roadway and his fellow employees for their support, adding, "I believe Roadway has the best drivers in the industry. I encourage other Roadway drivers to try to make it to NTDC next year and, hopefully, win another Grand Champion title for Roadway."
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) sponsors NTDC where professional drivers compete for national titles in eight different classes of vehicles. The drivers accumulate points by demonstrating their driving skill and knowledge of the trucking industry through a series of tests. The drivers complete a written examination, personal interview, pretrip inspection test and a driving skills test.
