Six Roadway Drivers Qualify to Compete at the National Truck Driving Championships [06.07.2008]

Akron, OH--Six Roadway professional drivers placed first in their respective classes at state truck driving competitions this weekend. Bruce Amor of South Bend, IN won in the 3-Axle class; Larier Dumont of Concord, NH won in the 5-axle class; Robbie Granstrom of Oklahoma City, OK won in the 3-Axle class; Felipe Leyva of Oakland, CA won in the Straight Truck class; William Stacy Sanom of Shreveport, LA won in the Twins class; Mitch Stegner of Columbia, MO won in the Flatbed class; and Patrick Wickman of Concord, NH won the Twins class.

These wins qualify each of these state champions for the 71th Annual National Truck Driving Championships in Houston, TX on August 18-23, 2008.

Bruce Amor has been with Roadway for over 27 years. Competing since 1989, he has previously reached the honor of participationg in the National Truck Driving Championships in 2000 and 2001. He placed state champ in the Sleeper Class in 2001.

Robbie Granstrom also returns this year to the National Truck Driving Championships. Robbie won the 2001 Pre-trip Inspection Award and earned the Oklahoma 3-Axle championship in 2001. Felipe Leyva repeats his 2003 win this year as the California Straight Truck state champion. Mitch Stegner again ascends to the National Truck Driving Championships. Mitch won the Missouri Flatbed championship in 2007 as well as this year. He has worked for Roadway since 2000.

Patrick Wickman joins the National Truck Driving Championships as a 2000 repeat state champion. Patrick was the New Hampshire 3-Axle state champion in 2000 and the Twins state champion in 1998. This year he earned the 2008 New Hampshire Twins state championship.

To participate in state-level competitions, drivers must be accident-free for the 12 months leading up to the event. The state competitions include challenging skills and maneuvering tests on a driving course, a pre-trip inspection, and a written exam on vehicle operation and federal safety regulations.

These state level champions will compete at the National Truck Driving Championships event August 18-23 at the George R. Brown Convention Center Houston. Approximately 400 drivers from around the country will vie for national titles in their respective vehicle classes. The American Trucking Associations sponsors the event.
