AKRON, Ohio-August 17, 2000-Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) and Christina's Smile Children's Dental Clinic have a common goal-to provide free dental care to as many underprivileged children as possible across the United States. During the 2000 campaign, a contribution of over $259,000 was presented to Dr. Richard Garza, founder of Christina's Smile, by Michael Wickham, Chairman and CEO of Roadway, at Roadway's 4th Annual Chip in Fore Kids Klassic Golf Tournament in Akron, OH on
July 17.
Fundraising events at Roadway field facilities, as well as the proceeds from the golf tournament, made the contribution possible. "The enthusiastic and determined commitment of our employees for the well-being and health of children is a source of great pride for Roadway," said Wickham. "It's our people that make our company strong."
Christina's Smile Children's Dental Clinic is a program that, in cooperation with the PGA/Senior PGA TOUR, provides free dental care to disadvantaged children in communities that host TOUR visits. The two 48-foot semi-trailers that house the clinics are moved and maintained by Roadway free of charge.
Since 1990, the program has produced quality comprehensive charitable dental care to over 19,000 children, providing them with more than $6 million worth of dentistry. The dentists, who volunteer, are recruited to deliver quality dental care to these children from the local communities. The children are identified and organized by local charitable organizations. This year over 2,800 children will receive approximately $900,000 worth of free, much-needed dental care.
