Roadway Express Receives Circle Of Excellence Award For Superior Enviornmental Manangement [06.01.2000]

Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD), one of the nation's largest less-than-truckload carriers, is the recipient of the 2000 Circle of Excellence Award. The award was presented to Michael Wickham, chairman and chief executive officer for Roadway by the Distribution, Business Management Association (DBM) on May 16, as part of DBM's Warehouse of the Future 2000 show in Atlanta, GA during a dinner banquet attended by 300 top industry executives.

The Circle of Excellence Award is presented to leading companies in various industries that represent the highest standards of quality and technology. Moreover, it signifies the important attributes of consistency, integrity, responsibility,leadership, excellence and commitment to the environment. The shipping industry was the focus of the 2000 Award. Roadway was chosen by a panel of international judges from the top universities and associations in distribution, logistics and supply chain management.

"Roadway Express is extremely proud to receive the Circle of Excellence Award from the Distribution, Business Management Association. To be chosen by the international selection
committee is a validation of the processes and procedures that we
have in place," said Mike Wickham, chairman and CEO of Roadway. "Most importantly, though, it is a validation of the efforts of our 28,000 dedicated employees. We thank DBM for this recognition, which will further energize the efforts of our entire company."

Roadway has demonstrated an increasing awareness of environmental issues and opportunities by incorporating environmental strategies into its supply chain management process. This has been accomplished partly through Rexsis, Inc.,Roadway's wholly owned subsidiary, which provides a managed returns program with solutions to assist with cost reduction,customer satisfaction, environmental sensitivity and inventory. In addition, for nearly a decade, Roadway has had internal
environmental initiatives that have included recycling, waste
reduction, air quality programs and hazardous material control.

Roadway's top management has consistently demonstrated a strong
commitment to integrating environmental management into its daily
operations in the supply chain. The company's Corporate
Environmental, Health and Safety Policy and mission statement
clearly set forth the standards necessary for employees to
accomplish their tasks in accordance with environmental best practices.

Roadway uses formal tools to evaluate suppliers, vendors and
subcontractors for compliance with Roadway's internal
environmental standards. These evaluations were an integral part
of Roadway receiving ISO 9002 certification. The certification
covers the carrier's system-wide management and operation of the
transport of customer goods from origin pickup to destination delivery.
