Roadway Express' James Sheriff Named Highway Angel [05.31.2000]

AKRON, Ohio - May 31, 2000 - Roadway Express Inc.(NASDAQ: ROAD) driver James Sheriff has been recognized as a Highway Angel for his act of kindness shown towards a fellow traveler on the highway in June of
1999. He came to the aid of a motorist, whose car had rolled over several times, calling the police and paramedics and following up during the recovery period. The recipient of Sheriff's dedicated assistance nominated him for the award.

The Highway Angel program was introduced by the Truckload Carriers Association and sponsored by Volvo Trucks North America and Petro Stopping Centers. The program is an on-going effort to help recognize driver professionalism and to elevate the public's awareness of
and appreciation for outstanding drivers in the trucking industry.

Sheriff has been a professional driver for 34 years, spending 28 of those years driving for Roadway. He has driven over three million miles for Roadway without a preventable accident, equivalent to 120 trips around the equator.

"Jim is an outstanding example of the "Best-of-the-Best" drivers that Roadway contributes to the industry," said Vice President of Operations for the carrier, John Bronneck. "We are proud of his commitment to safety, his concern for the wellbeing of others, and the encouragement his achievements give to fellow drivers."

Sheriff's history of recognition includes: 1998 National Driver of the Year by the American Trucking Associations; Illinois Driver of the Year in 1992 and 1997; Goodyear State Highway Hero Award in 1997; Roadway's "Golden Q" Award; two Certificates of Commendation for safe driving from the U.S. Department of Transportation; and "Highway Angel" for his act of kindness in March 1997 at the scene of an accident.

Sheriff is based at Roadway's Chicago Heights, Ill. facility and is a member of the Teamsters Local 710. He and his wife, Mary Anne have been married for 32 years and have two daughters, Jeanine and Jolene. They reside in Homewood, Ill.
