Roadway Express Named Best in Logistics [06.27.2001]

Roadway Express, Inc. was awarded the honor of "VICS Collaborative Commerce Award for Best in Logistics 2001." The award was presented by Randy Mott, Senior Vice President and CIO of Dell Computer Corporation and Co-Chair of VICS Board of Directors, and Laura Golding, Director of VICS, to Robert W. Obee, Vice President & CIO for Roadway, on June 26, at the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards (VICS) Association Board Dinner at the Firehouse Restaurant in Chicago, IL.

The VICS 2001 Achievement Award honors outstanding examples of strategic thinking and leadership, as well as utilization of Uniform Code Council and VICS Standards, that have resulted in more effective supply chain partnerships. Also recognized are extraordinary efforts, and company-wide dedication to customer satisfaction, that have made continuous improvements in the supply chain.

The logistics category award is presented to a transportation company that has developed and/or implemented innovative internal systems and practices dedicated to cost-effective service and supply chain improvement.

"We're proud to be acknowledged by an organization that we hold in great esteem--VICS--and especially honored to be chosen as 'Best in Logistics'," stated Obee. "We developed systems and processes that allow us to externalize our transportation management systems by taking full advantage of new information technologies, while fully leveraging our internally developed 'back-end' systems. The major benefits are further efficiencies gained from electronic links between suppliers, retailers and Roadway's systems and the resulting availability of accurate, timely, reliable data to all supply chain participants."

According to Obee, technology is only part of the company's success story. "We've come to the market quickly with web sites and other Internet-based tools due to the quick, hard work by many bright, dedicated Roadway employees. The real reason customers value the information we provide them is that Roadway people treat information as the valuable asset it really is. Information about freight has become as important as the freight itself."
