The Home Depot Honors Roadway Express for Environmental Leadership [06.28.2001]

AKRON, Ohio--June 28, 2001--Roadway Express, Inc. received the first "Walk-the-Talk Award for Environmental Leadership" from The Home Depot. The award was presented by U.S. Senator Max Cleland of Georgia and Stacie Bearden, Senior Manager - Transportation Operations for The Home Depot. John Bronneck, Vice President of Operations, and Bob Zimmermann, Manager of Environmental Services, accepted the award on behalf of Roadway, on June 8, at a banquet following The Home Depot's 2001 Core Carrier Logistics Conference in Braselton, GA.

To be eligible for the award, a carrier must demonstrate a commitment to environmental leadership that exhibits an innovative, programmatic approach to reducing their environmental footprint. The carrier's programs were evaluated based upon criteria that included corporate commitment and associate involvement, environmental impact, economic impact and best practice innovation.

"This is a tremendous award for Roadway from such a valued customer," stated Bronneck. "It demonstrates that we are environmentally responsible and have good programs and processes in place. We are always looking for new things we can do to be proactive and have a positive impact on the environment, whether it is the elimination of waste or innovative disposal plans. All employees are to be commended for embracing such a worthy commitment."

Roadway's programs that were evaluated included a commitment to network optimization and the reduction of empty miles; fuel efficient tractors and alternative fuel testing; forklifts powered by clean-burning alternative fuels; recycling of used oil, dunnage, computers and office materials; identifying waste consolidation opportunities and compliance with all state and federal regulations on hazmat disposal and storm water runoff; partnering with community organizations to utilize products that might otherwise have been disposed of; reducing energy consumption by using energy-efficient technologies; and a state-of-the-art emergency response system and employee training program.

Roadway has made a commitment to be involved in a Transportation Environmental Task Force developed by The Home Depot for 2001. This will be a partnership between The Home Depot and some of their transportation companies to discuss environmental issues and mutually beneficial solutions for recycling, energy reduction and waste minimization.
