
AKRON, Ohio-April 25, 2000-Roadway Express, Inc.(NASDAQ: ROAD) was named the "2000 LTL Nationwide Carrier of the Year" by the National Small Shipments Traffic Conference (NASSTRAC). James D.Staley,president and chief operating officer for Roadway accepted the award from Peter Bradley, Chief Editor for Logistics Management & Distribution Report and John S.DuBiel, Provider Relations Committee Chairman,NASSTRAC, on April 25, in Naples, Fla.
NASSTRAC members are shippers who manage their companies' less-than-truckload and small-package shipments. They vote for the carriers they recognize as having superior performance in the LTL field. The criteria for rating the carriers' performance includes
electronic-data interface (EDI), innovation in quality service products, satellite tracking and other technology,service performance, loss and damage claims ratios, rating and billing accuracy, and support of the association and its legislative goals.

Roadway has won the LTL Carrier of the Year Award for 11 consecutive years, and 12 of the 14 years the award has been given. The Company was selected the best in its category from a field of nationwide, regional or multi-regional less-than-truckload carriers. The Carrier of the Year program is co-sponsored by NAASTRAC and Logistics Management and Distribution Report, a trade magazine for buyers of logistics services.
