Roadway Express' Jim Peters Drives One Million Safe Miles [04.21.2000]

AKRON, Ohio-April 21, 2000-Roadway Express, Inc.(NASDAQ: ROAD), one of the nation's largest less-than-truckload motor carriers, announced that professional pickup and delivery city driver, Jim Peters,has driven over one million miles across America's roadways without a preventable accident, the equivalent of circling the earth's equator 40 times.

Peters, 52, began driving for Roadway in 1978, and is domiciled at the Lancaster, PA facility, serving customers in Eastern Lancaster County and Chester County. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters local 771.

"Roadway Express tracks the number of accident-free miles for each driver, and reaching the million mile mark is a true achievement," said Dennis McMickens, director of safety for Roadway. "This demonstrates the company's commitment to being the safest carrier in North America. Jim joins the 'Best of the Best' drivers and represents our industry in the finest way possible."

Roadway employees achieved several important safety milestones in 1999 for the second year in a row. The company's city pickup and delivery drivers drove an average of 7,382 miles between accidents.The company's linehaul drivers moved freight across the country traveling
an average of 856,151 miles between accidents.Roadway's dockworkers, who loaded and unloaded 19.1 tons of freight last year, logged a record 20,579 hours between injuries of any kind.

Peters and his wife, Wendy, reside in Lititz, PA. His interests include attending auctions and flea markets, as well as collecting antiques.
