Roadway Express and Employees Donate Over $450,000 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund [10.25.2001]

Roadway Express and its employees joined together to provide support to the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Fund to aid the victims and rescue workers with the national disaster recovery effort following the September 11 terrorist attacks. James Staley, President and Chief Operating Officer for Roadway, presented a check for over $450,000 to Mark Fairhurst, Director of Public Support for the Summit County American Red Cross, at Roadway's corporate offices in Akron, OH.

"On behalf of the staff and the volunteers of the American Red Cross, thank you for your heartfelt support and your prayers. The contributions you have made today will make a difference," stated Fairhurst.

For every dollar that an employee donated through a special payroll deduction plan, Roadway matched each dollar with a corporate contribution.

Staley commented, "It is gratifying to see Team Roadway respond to this need in such an overwhelming way. These contributions represent hard-earned dollars that were generously donated by a cross section of Roadway employees. I am proud to see this outpouring from employees at our corporate offices, our field management and staff and our Teamster employees who work our docks, drive our trucks and serve our customers. Together, we are sending a message that all employees at Roadway really care and are willing to do something to make a difference."

The core mission of the American Red Cross is to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Over these past few weeks you have witnessed Red Cross volunteers at their very best. Every day, hour by hour, they are providing lifesaving assistance of food, shelter, grief counseling and blood. To date, your American Red Cross has provided a safe refuge for more than 4,000 people in over 70 shelters, served 6 million meals and snacks to survivors, emergency personnel and stranded travelers, and have helped over 80,000 people by providing crisis, grief and spiritual counseling.
