Roadway Express' Travis Walker Selected Oklahoma Safety Professional Of The Year [04.07.2000]

AKRON, Ohio-April 7, 2000-Roadway Express, Inc.(NASDAQ: ROAD) announced that Travis Walker, a sleeper team safety supervisor, was named the "Oklahoma Safety Professional of the Year." Bill Childs, president of the Oklahoma Trucking Association Safety Management
Council presented the award to Travis at the annual Safety Awards Banquet on February 15, in Oklahoma City.

One of the main criteria for the award is nomination by peers. The final selection panel includes representatives from the highway commission, the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. The recipient is chosen to be the person who will best represent the trucking industry and the Oklahoma Trucking Association.

"We are proud of Travis Walker's accomplishment of outstanding performance that is representative of our company-wide commitment to safety," stated president and chief operating officer for Roadway, Jim Staley. "To be honored by your peers is a reward in itself. We appreciate the professionalism and dedication Travis has given the
company during his career."

Travis has been with Roadway for 33 years. He was a long haul driver domiciled out of the El Reno and Oklahoma City relays until 1994, when he was selected as Sleeper Safety Supervisor. As a Captain for the American Trucking Associations' America's Road Team in 1989, he
participated in speaking engagements and media events on behalf of the industry, promoting how to share the road safely with commercial vehicles.

We congratulate Travis for all of his efforts to keep safety foremost in the daily lives of our employees and the industry."

Walker is a member of the Oklahoma Trucking Association, the Tennessee Trucking Association and the Arkansas Trucking Association, as well as a judge at then National Truck Driving Championships and involved in
the events of the Oklahoma Truck Driving Championships. He is a member of the Masons and Pace Community Christian Church in Oklahoma City. He and his wife, Sue have two daughters and three grandchildren.
