
AKRON, OH--June 21, 2002--Roadway Express, Inc. has awarded the GAR Foundation Scholarship to Cole L. Modlin, a senior-year graduate of home schooling. The GAR Foundation was established in memory of Roadway founder Galen J. Roush and his wife Ruth, and annually sponsors scholarship awards to dependents of eligible Roadway Express employees. The scholarship has a value of $5,000 per year for four years.
Cole is the son of Jill and Roger Modlin. Roger is a parts supervisor for Roadway Express at the Dallas, Texas, facility.
As a result of his academic endeavors, Cole graduated with a 3.99 grade point average on a scale of 4.0. An advanced classical guitarist, he has placed three consecutive years in the Sonata Club Music Competition and currently is a member of the Worship Band. For the past six years, Cole has participated in the 9th Texas Living History (Civil War re-enacting) at many schools and historic battlefields across the nation. He also was a member of the Fairmount Drama Club.
Active in church and community service, Cole has organized several church-based outreach programs for the needy and, as a youth pastor intern, has led worship for Sunday morning service at Restoration Church in Euless. He has been an assistant Sunday school teacher, summer camp counselor, a leading participant in several Mexican and Honduran mission activities, a volunteer at a food kitchen for the homeless and a regular speaker at youth events. He is a church cell group leader and, for the past three years, has served on the Restoration Youth Council.
Future plans for Cole include majoring in theology in the fall in order to pursue a career as a pastor.
