Roadway Awards Scholarship to Sarah Smith of Boiling Springs, PA [06.20.2002]

AKRON, OH - June 20, 2002 - Roadway Express, Inc. has awarded the GAR Foundation Scholarship to Sarah M. Smith of Boiling Springs High School in Boiling Springs, PA. The GAR Foundation was established in memory of Roadway founder Galen J. Roush and his wife Ruth, and annually sponsors scholarship awards to dependents of eligible Roadway Express employees. The scholarship has a value of $5,000 per year for four years.

Sarah is the daughter of Beth and Keith Smith. Keith is the relay operations manager for Roadway Express at the Harrisburg, PA, facility.

A distinguished honor student, Sarah graduated with a 4.0 grade point average on a scale of 4.0 and was inducted into the National Honor Society. She was the editor and a three-year staff member of her high school's yearbook, as well as executive board member, president, and vice president of Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD). She served as a liaison from the SADD Club to the Prom Styles committee, in which she was one of three students involved in planning the annual event that creates drug and alcohol awareness. Sarah also was a committee member of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law in Washington, D.C. attended a mathematics camp at Shippensburg University, and was a finalist in the Miss American Coed Pageant.

Throughout her high school career, Sarah participated in annual math-a-thons, Summerfair musicals, Interact Club, Youth Alive Club, Young Life, Varsity Field Hockey, Cross Country, Track and Ski Club. Additionally, Sarah volunteered her time and talents at the Special Olympics, Four Diamonds dance marathon, Carlisle Hospital Drill Video, Roses' Clothing Drives, church choir, church youth group, Carlisle Soup Kitchen and Carlisle Crop Walk. Other long-term projects include tutoring at a local middle school, speaking at youth conferences around Pennsylvania and aiding in a handicapped classroom.

Future plans for Sarah include majoring in public relations with a minor in psychology at James Madison University in Virginia in the fall.
