
AKRON, Ohio--June 19, 2002--Roadway Express, Inc. has awarded the J. Thomas Topping Memorial Merit Scholarship to Amy Waycaster of Muscle Shoals High School in Muscle Shoals, AL. Amy is the daughter of Pamela and Alan Waycaster. Alan is the terminal manager for Roadway Express at the Florence, AL, facility.
Amy was chosen to receive the scholarship on the basis of her test scores, academic record, leadership and extracurricular accomplishments. The scholarship has a value of $5000 per year for up to four years.
A National Merit Scholar Finalist, Amy ranked fourth in her graduating class and has the distinction of maintaining a 4.0 grade point average throughout her high school career. She served as president of the Future Business Leaders of America for the past two years and was inducted into the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (National Mathematics Honor Society) and Mr./Miss Muscle Shoals High School Coronation Court. Amy earned Second Place in her school in the ALA-LA-MISS Math Competition Test, Fifth and Seventh Place Individual Awards in the Alabama Math Tournaments, and First Place in the Alabama Science Olympiad State Competition.
Amy attended the Birmingham Southern College Student Leaders in Service Camp and the Joint Technical Leadership Conference in Birmingham, AL, and was active as an Athletic Hostess and as a member of Interclub Council, Health Occupations Students of America, Science Club, Spanish Club, German Club, and Student Council.
Amy also devotes her time and talents to a long list of community service organizations. She is a Helen Keller Hospital Junior volunteer, Special Olympics volunteer, volunteer tutor through the MYPAL tutoring program for third and fourth grade students, and a member of the Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Students, and the youth group at the Highland Park Church of Christ. Amy was voted "most dependable" by her senior class.
Future plans for Amy include majoring in pharmacy in the fall. She has been accepted into the Early Entry Program at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy.
