
AKRON, Ohio - February 8, 2000 - Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROAD) had two professional drivers named Captains of the 2000 America's Road Team, sponsored by the American Trucking Associations (ATA). The selected drivers are Ronald Brotherton of the Company's Cleveland, OH terminal and David Wright, driving out of the Memphis, TN relay.
For the next 24 months, Brotherton and Wright will join 11 other representatives from other trucking companies throughout the United States, participating in speaking engagements and media events on behalf of the industry. These 'Best-of-the-Best' drivers will spend approximately one week each month traveling throughout the country making presentations to civic organizations, media representatives and driver's education classes on how to safely share the road with commercial vehicles.
Safety is a top priority for Roadway company-wide. "Ron and David are to be commended for this impressive achievement," said Roadway President and Chief Operating Officer, Jim Staley. "They join an elite group of Roadway drivers, who exemplify the professionalism and commitment to safety we have within our ranks."
Ron joined Roadway in 1985 as a Pickup and Delivery driver out of the company's Elyria, OH terminal, transferring to the Cleveland facility in 1995. He has been a member of the company's District 15 Road Team for the last two years. For the past 18 years, he has served as a police officer for the Amherst Police Department. Ron belongs to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 122 and the Ohio Patrolman Benevolent Association. He and his wife, Kathy, reside in Amherst, OH with their two sons, Ron III and Ryan.
As a long haul road driver, David joined Roadway in 1974 at the Memphis, TN terminal, where he is currently domiciled. He has 2 1/2 million miles of safe driving and a total of 32 years as a professional driver. He has served on both the District 7 and the Tennessee State Road Teams. David writes children's stories and is currently working on his second novel. He is a Master Mason, Scottish Rite and Zamon Grotto Shriner, as well as an active member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. David and his wife, Sandra, reside in Memphis, TN and are the parents of four children, Ted, Melissa, Kristi and Karen, and grandparents of seven.
