AKRON, Ohio--November 21, 2002--Roadway Express, Inc.'s highway safety efforts were highly recognized recently by the awarding of the Pennsylvania Governor's Highway Safety Award to the Safe80 Task Force at the annual safety conference.
The conference was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Michael M. Ryan, Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration, acknowledged the award recipients. The award was presented to residents and organizations that worked above and beyond normal job or social responsibilities to promote highway safety during 2001.
As a founding member of the Safe80 Task Force, Roadway supports the organization's goals to promote extensive highway safety initiatives, is an advocate of increased enforcement efforts and supports substantial highway improvement for the I-80 corridor. Roadway's recent Safe80 Task Force project researched innovative ways to prevent accidents and make interstate highways safer through education, enforcement and engineering. One of the innovations reduced corridor accidents along Interstate 80 from Tannersville to the New Jersey border by 36%. Additional task force members include the Public Utilities Commission, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, community members and local and state police.
"Along with all the employees at our facility here in the Stroudsburg area, we are proud to be a part of the Safe80 Task Force, providing community service and making our highways safer for the motoring public," stated Thomas H. Smedley, Jr., Terminal Manager at Roadway's Stroudsburg facility.
As further support for the Safe80 Task Force, Roadway is donating the services of one of its trailers to be a "Rolling Highway Safety Promotional Vehicle" by adding a billboard vinyl cover to its exterior. The Safe80 Roadway trailer will travel extensively through the state and region.
