AKRON, Ohio - September 8, 2003 - Roadway Express, Inc. is proud to announce that Greg Nauertz, a professional pickup and delivery driver out of Roadway's Phoenix, Arizona facility, won National Champion honors in the 3-Axle Class at the 66th National Truck Driving Championships held in Columbus, Ohio on August 19 - 23, 2003.
The American Trucking Associations sponsored the four-day competition, consisting of 353 drivers from around the country. The event tests the skills of drivers through an intense driving competition, written examination, personal interview and pre-trip inspection. It's an opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their driving skills and commitment to safety. Among other requirements, a driver must drive safely for one year before the event and place first in his or her class at the state level.
Also succeeding in the event was Ken Epley, a professional linehaul shuttle driver for Roadway from the Chicago Heights, Illinois facility, placing second in the Tanker Class.
"We congratulate these elite professional drivers for their fine achievements. They have truly distinguished themselves in the arena of safety excellence," stated Executive Vice President of Operations for Roadway, John Bronneck. "Our drivers exhibited an incredible display of sportsmanship, competitive spirit and Roadway pride throughout the competition. That represents the strong commitment all Roadway employees strive for to be safe."
