AKRON, Ohio - September 16, 2003 - Greg Nauertz, a professional Roadway driver/sales representative domiciled at the company's Phoenix, Arizona facility, won National Champion honors in the 3-Axle Class at the 66th National Truck Driving Championships held in Columbus, Ohio on August 19 - 23, 2003.
The American Trucking Associations sponsored the four-day competition, consisting of 353 drivers from around the country. The event tests the skills of drivers through an intense driving competition, written examination, personal interview and pre-trip inspection. It's an opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their driving skills and commitment to safety. Among other requirements, a driver must drive safely for one year before the event and place first in his or her class at the state level.
"We congratulate Greg for his outstanding performance that won him Champion honors. He is a fine example of the caliber of our engaged employees, who are committed to safety and providing customers quality service," stated Executive Vice President of Operations for Roadway, John Bronneck. "This achievement distinguishes Roadway as being a reliable and valuable link in supply chain management for our customers."
A professional truck driver for 28 years, Nauertz has worked for Roadway for 15 years and is a member of Local 104 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He has competed at the state level since 1991, and was Arizona Grand Champion in 1999 and 2003. He has driven over one half million consecutive accident-free miles.
"I compete so I may be a safety leader within Roadway and the whole industry, and to improve my defensive driving skills," stated Nauertz. "I want to thank my co-workers and employer for their encouragement and support. The competition is important to the company and the industry and it was an honor to participate."
Nauertz and his wife, Carol Jean reside in Peoria, Arizona and have six children: Kacey, Kallie, Elizabeth, Cory, Jared and John. Motorcycling, teaching, writing poetry and spending time with family and friends are Nauertz's hobbies. He facilitates a weekly relationship instructional group to help others achieve their full potential personally and professionally.
