SPOKANE, WA - October 24, 2003 - Phillip Shadden, a professional driver for Roadway Express, Inc., has logged one million miles, the equivalent of circling the earth's equator 40 times, without a preventable accident.

Shadden, 50, is a linehaul driver for the company's Spokane facility and a member of Local 690 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. In the 18 years he has been with Roadway he has never had a preventable accident.

"Congratulations to Phil for this special milestone. With individual employee performance such as exists in Spokane, I am confident that this dedication can make our vision to become the "Safest Transportation Company in North America" a reality,' stated Bob Stull, President of Roadway Express. "This success is a testimony to the pride and commitment our engaged workforce has while serving our customers and working safely."

Shadden will be recognized for his achievement at a safety breakfast to be held at the Roadway facility in Spokane on October 28. He will also receive a plaque and jacket honoring his commitment to safety.

"We are all very proud of Phil's dedication to safety," stated Andy Orchard, Spokane Terminal Manager. "Eastern Washington experiences a wide range of weather, including severe winters, which makes this achievement even more impressive. Congratulations to Phil from the Spokane team."

Shadden and his wife, Patty, reside in Spokane. He enjoys studying and exploring history. Last year he went to a Civil War battlefield, and this year intends to travel the Lewis & Clark trail.
