Committed to helping improve the environmental performance of the freight delivery system, Roadway is partnering with SmartWay, a voluntary public-private initiative between the EPA and the freight industry. The SmartWay Transport Partnership is designed to address key national concerns of energy security, energy savings and environmental justice in the U.S.
Over a ten-year period, Roadway has "increased ton-mileage by 29 percent, decreased fuel consumption by nine million gallons, and made operational changes allowing more tonnage haul while reducing power unit road mileage by 49 million." Most important, Roadway's environmental policy has prompted innovative practices in the use and care of natural resources in all aspects of operations.
The SmartWay Transport Partnership creates strong market-based incentives that challenge companies shipping products, and the truck and rail companies delivering those products, to improve the environmental performance of freight operations. SmartWay partners improve their energy efficiency, save money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
