Roadway Express Joins With Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay(SM) Transport Partnership [04.22.2004]

AKRON, Ohio - April 22, 2004 - Roadway Express, Inc. is a charter partner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SmartWay(SM) Transport Partnership, working closely with the Agency for more than a year to lay the ground work and develop the goals for the partnership to create environmental efficiencies.

The SmartWay Transport Partnership is a voluntary program between various freight industry sectors and EPA designed to address key national concerns which will improve energy security, energy savings and environmental justices in the U.S. The program challenges companies shipping products to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment improves air quality and reduces costs.

Along with 51 freight shippers and carriers, Roadway has committed to an environmental improvement goal over a three-year period and annual progress reporting to EPA. "We are committed to support the SmartWay Transport Partnership in its effort to achieve a healthier and safer environment," stated President and CEO, Roadway Group of Yellow Roadway Corporation, Jim Staley. "This partnership is a symbol of superior environmental achievement that will be accomplished by our engaged workforce as they demonstrate good corporate citizenship, improve fuel efficiency and reduce energy consumption."
