AKRON, Ohio - May 20, 2004 - Roadway Express, Inc. today recognized four high school recipients of the Company's sponsored scholarships, and five GAR scholarship winners, all of which are children of the motor carrier's employees.
National Merit Scholarship Corporation, an independent, non-profit organization, administers these annual scholarships. Winners are chosen on the basis of test scores, academic record, leadership and extracurricular accomplishments. The scholarships have a value of $5000 per year for up to four years.
The GAR Foundation was first established by the Galen Roush family in 1967 as the Roush Foundation, and it was renamed the GAR Foundation in 1981. Galen Roush and his brother, Carroll founded Roadway Express in 1930. The GAR's charitable priorities are education, the arts and community well-being.
"We want to congratulate this year's scholarship winners for their strong commitment to continuing their education and demonstrating their leadership through school activities, community involvement and personal growth. We are proud to honor them and support them as they pursue their long-term success," stated Roadway Express President, Bob Stull.
