Roadway Express Awards Scholarship to Amy F. Hoffmann of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio [06.18.2004]

AKRON, Ohio - June 18, 2004 - Roadway Express, Inc. has awarded the GAR Foundation Scholarship to Amy F. Hoffmann of Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. The GAR Foundation was established in memory of Roadway founder Galen J. Roush and his wife, Ruth, and annually sponsors awards to dependents of eligible Roadway Express employees. The scholarship has a value of $5000 per year for four years.

Amy was chosen on the basis of her test scores, academic record, leadership and extracurricular accomplishments. She is the daughter of John and Judy Hoffmann. John is a dock professional at the Roadway Express Akron, OH facility.

Amy graduated 8th in a class of 208 students with a weighted grade point average of 4.25 on a scale of 4.0. She has received First Honors for eight semesters, the Harvard University Book Award, the President's Award for Student Service, designation as a National Merit Commended Scholar, an English department award, Outstanding Senior award, and recognition as an Akron Beacon Journal Silver Star Student.

Amy was involved in many extracurricular activities, including serving as vice president of the National Honor Society, president of Students Together to End Prejudice and secretary-treasurer of the mock trial team. She was an officer for two years in the Ohio North Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Alumni Association and was selected as staff for the organization's 2004 seminar. During her high school years, Amy volunteered at a day camp for children with disabilities, a tutor program at a local elementary school and a retirement home. She earned varsity letters in soccer and cross country, and recently received a captain's award and four-year letter of distinction in track and field. She has studied piano for nine years and performed with the Walsh Jesuit stage band during her junior and senior years. Amy also wrote for the school newspaper, enjoyed rock-climbing with the outdoors club and frequented Spanish club events.

Amy plans to study health and exercise science or biology at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA. She hopes to pursue a career as a nursing professional.
