
AKRON, Ohio - June 23, 2004 - Roadway Express, Inc. has awarded the GAR Foundation Scholarship to Daniel J. Coerper of Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School in Flossmoor, IL. The GAR Foundation was established in memory of Roadway founder Galen J. Roush and is wife, Ruth, and annually sponsors awards to dependents of eligible Roadway Express employees. The scholarship has a value of $5000 per year for four years.
Daniel was chosen on the basis of his test scores, academic record, leadership and extracurricular accomplishments. He is the son of Dale and Jacquelein Coerper. Dale is a Dock Spotter at the Roadway Express' Chicago Heights facility.
Daniel graduated with honors, ranking 11th in a class of 668 students and earning a weighted grade point average of 5.725 on a scale of 6.0. He was a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta-the Math Honor Society, a Math Olympiad, a Homewood-Flossmoor Scholar, a Presidential Scholar, and the recipient of the Viking Award and the Certificate of Excellence in Psychology from the American Psychological Association.
Extracurricular activities included being Captain of the high school wrestling team and participating in intramural football, baseball and basketball. He enjoyed peer tutoring and campaigning for a Village Trustee candidate.
Daniel plans to attend the University of Chicago where he will pursue a career in psychiatry, specializing in personality disorders.
