LINCOLN, Nebraska - September 9, 2004 - Daryl Johnson, a professional driver/dockworker for Roadway Express, placed second in the 3-Axle Class at the 67th National Truck Driving Championships held in Salt Lake City, Utah, August 18-21, 2004. This event is considered the "Super Bowl of Safety" and is sponsored by the American Trucking Associations.

A professional truck driver for 25 years, Johnson has worked for Roadway for 14 years. He is domiciled at the Lincoln facility and is a member of Local 554 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He was sent to the national competition as a Nebraska State Champion. His accomplishments include Nebraska State Champion in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000; placing second in the Nationals in the 3-Axle Class in 1999; 2003 Pre-Trip Award in the Nationals; 2000 Bucky Buchholz Award; 14 years of safe driving for Roadway; and 25 years of traveling the highways without a preventable accident.

"A professional truck driver is somebody who looks out for other people's safety and well being, hoping to set a good example for other people," said Johnson.

The four-day competition consisted of 370 professional truck drivers from around the country. The event tests the skills of drivers through an intense driving competition, written examination, personal interview and pre-trip inspection. It's an opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their driving skills and commitment to safety. Among other requirements, a driver must drive safely for one year before the event and place first in his or her class at the state level.

"We congratulate Daryl for his outstanding achievement at the national event. He exemplifies the tremendous commitment, pride and professionalism essential to make our highways safe while serving our customers," stated Bob Stull, president of Roadway Express. "He stands as a leader in our industry."
