AKRON, Ohio - February 4, 2005 - Roadway Express million-mile safe driver, Steve Norbeck, has been selected to serve as an America's Road Team Captain by the American Trucking Associations.
For the next 24 months, Norbeck will join 12 other representatives from other trucking companies throughout the United States, participating in speaking engagements, media events and drivers' education classes on behalf of the industry. These top professional drivers will address transportation issues and answer questions about the trucking industry and its commitment to highway safety. The Road Team Captains will share safe driving tips and offer motorists advice on how to safely share the road with commercial vehicles.
"We congratulate Steve for his tremendous achievement. He has joined an elite group of dedicated drivers who exemplify the commitment and leadership needed to be the "Best of the Best" in the industry," stated Bob Stull, president of Roadway Express.
Norbeck, 54, joined Roadway Express in 1993. He is a long-haul driver domiciled at the Roadway Worcester, Mass. facility and a member of Local 170 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. His trucking career spans 53 years. Norbeck has participated in the Massachusetts State Driving Championship, earning State Champion three times, Grand Champion twice, and Best Vehicle Inspection award twice. He also placed as high as 3rd competing in the National Truck Driving Championships and was selected as the 2004 Massachusetts Driver of the Year. He has reached a milestone of driving over one million miles accident-free. In addition, he is a commercial pilot and has participated 11 years in the FAA "Wings" safety program.
"Being selected as an America's Road Team Captain is the highest honor. I will use this as a platform to promote increased training and safe driving practices for my fellow drivers and the motoring public," said Norbeck.
The competition consisted of a review of their knowledge about trucking industry safety issues, a test of communications skills and interview abilities, and a review of community service. Each nominee must have an excellent safety record and demonstrate an ability to communicate a commitment to safety, professionalism and courtesy.
