Helping Rebuild the Tsunami Devastated 112-Mile Sri Lanka Railway [03.14.2005]

John Bronneck, Roadway Express Executive Vice President-Operations, handed over the keys to two trucks on Wednesday, March 9. The trucks, donated by Roadway Express and Yellow Transportation, subsidiaries of Yellow Roadway Corporation, will aid in the rebuilding of the 112-mile Sri Lanka Railway ruined by the disastrous Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami. The railway is a critical means for moving freight and passenger transportation in the country.

The trucks will help in the collection of railroad materials throughout the Southeast by CSX volunteers. Materials will then be loaded into containers at the Jacksonville Port at Blount Island for overseas shipment to Sri Lanka.

"Roadway Express and Yellow Transportation are pleased to be part of such an important project that will restore the infrastructure that is the lifeline of so many people," said Bronneck. "Our best wishes go out to all the affected areas."

CSXI President James Hertwig said: "We are thankful for the help of Roadway Express and Yellow Transportation and for their generous donations."

Rebuilding the Sri Lanka railroad is planned to begin July 1, 2005, and is expected to cost approximately $125 million (U.S.).
