
Five Roadway drivers placed first in their respective state driving championships to qualify for the 2005 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC). They join the 24 Roadway drivers who have already qualified for the NTDC to be held in Tampa, FL, in August.
Roadway driver and freight handling professional, Timothy (Tim) J. Smith, based in Salt Lake City, UT, placed first in the 5-axle flatbed class and was named grand champion in the Utah Truck Driving Championships.
Marty E. Lyons, a Roadway driver and freight handling professional based in Kansas City, KS, placed first in the 3-axle class and was awarded the honor of grand champion in the Kansas Truck Driving Championships.
Another Roadway driver and freight handling professional, William (Kent) Durant of Wichita, KS, received first-place honors in the 4-axle class and was recognized for having the top score on the written test in the Kansas Truck Driving Championships.
In addition, Rick G. Harris, a professional driver from Kansas City, KS, placed first in the twins class; and Michael W. West, a driver and freight handling professional from Roadway's Roanoke, VA, service center, received first place in the flatbed class.
These 5 new state champions join the current 24 Team Roadway members at the NTDC:

These drivers merit the highest recognition for their dedication to safety, professionalism, and driving skill.
Competitions include: a personal interview, challenging maneuvering tests, vehicle inspection procedures, and a written examination covering vehicle operation and federal safety regulations.
Each year the Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council of the American Trucking Associations hosts the NTDC, known to many as the "Super Bowl of Safety." The 2005 competition (the event's 68th year) will be held Tuesday, August 16 to Saturday, August 20, 2005, at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, FL.
