Five more Roadway drivers placed first in their respective state driving championships to qualify for the 2005 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) to be held in Tampa, FL, in August. These talented five join the 29 Roadway drivers who have already qualified for the NTDC.

Roadway driver and freight handling professional Timothy G. Walters of Grenada, MS, placed first in the straight truck class. Timothy was also a past 2004 NTDC competitor and Mississippi state champion in the straight truck class.

Eric E. Radkey, a Roadway driver and freight handling professional based in Portland, OR, placed first in the 3-axle class and was awarded the honor of Rookie of the Year in the Oregon Truck Driving Championships.

Another Roadway driver and freight handling professional, Lynn E. Springer of Portland, OR, received first-place honors in the 5-axle class. Lynn was also a past 2004 NTDC competitor and Oregon state champion.

In addition, Donald W. Jepson, a driver and freight handling professional based in Milwaukee, WI, placed first in the sleeper class; and Scott M. Troyk, a professional driver from Roadway's Milwaukee, WI, service center, received first place in the tanker class. Scott was also a past 2004 NTDC competitor and Wisconsin state champion.

Roadway drivers also won the Wisconsin Team Trophy at that state's competition.

Each year the Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council of the American Trucking Associations hosts the NTDC, known to many as the "Super Bowl of Safety." The 2005 competition (the event's 68th year) will be held Tuesday, August 16 to Saturday, August 20, 2005, at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, FL.

The state competitions include: a personal interview, challenging maneuvering tests, vehicle inspection procedures, and a written examination covering vehicle operation and federal safety regulations. Competitors are also tested on vehicle inspection procedures. Among other NTDC requirements, a driver must operate safely for one year and place first in his or her class at the state level.
