Nashville, Tenn., June 23, 2006 — Glenn Jones, a professional driver for Roadway, has achieved the extraordinary milestone of driving four million consecutive miles without a preventable accident. This career milestone is the equivalent to circling the Earth's equator 160 times or driving from New York to Los Angeles over 1,428 times without a single accident.
Glenn joins Sam Hamilton as the second active four-million-mile accident-free driver at the Roadway service center in Nashville, Tenn. Glenn began driving for Roadway 33 years ago. His career as a professional driver spans 36 years.
There have been 17 four-million-mile accident-free drivers in Roadway history--10 have retired and 7 are still active drivers.
"Safety has always been the number one priority at Roadway. Glenn's commitment to safe driving and customer service demonstrates the pride he has in his work and in Roadway," said Mike Smid, President and CEO of Roadway. "Glenn is a true leader for our company and for the transportation industry."
Glenn was recognized for his remarkable safety achievement with a police escort and reception at the Roadway service center in Nashville, Tenn. He enjoyed a special dinner celebration at which he received a plaque, jacket, cap, and belt buckle. A tractor emblazoned with his name and achievement was also presented to him to drive while a Roadway employee. Additionally, he received letters of commendation from Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Senators Bill Frist and Lamar Alexander.
"Our whole team is very proud of Glenn's outstanding safety achievement," said Tom Agee, Nashville service team manager. "He sets a tremendous example for other drivers and truly represents the best-of-the-best in our business."
"Patience and a positive attitude. Those are two things you need to reach the four million mile mark," noted Glenn. "Don't lower yourself to others' standards or give in to road rage. Stay focused. Always leave some distance between other vehicles."
Glenn and his wife, Annette, reside in Joelton, Tenn. They have one son (Jeff) and three daughters (Angie, Stephanie and Kim), plus eight grandchildren. The Jones family is a member of the New Hope Freewill Baptist Church of Joelton. In addition to spending time with his grandchildren, Glenn's hobbies include detailing show cars, trucks and bikes as well as gardening.
