Remembering Baseball Legend "Buck" O'Neil [10.10.2006]

John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil, whose grace, optimism and genuine love for people endeared him to many on and off the baseball field, died on Oct. 6, 2006. He was 94.

Considered to be one of the game's greatest goodwill ambassadors, Buck tirelessly crusaded to keep the legacy of the Negro Leagues alive.

He described the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which he co-founded in 1990, as his grandest achievement. Educating people about the Negro Leagues was second only to his passion for baseball.

We at Roadway were privileged to witness Buck's warmth, wit and selfless dedication to baseball firsthand. Over the past two years, he frequently was a special guest at "Times of Greatness," a mobile museum dedicated to the Negro Leagues and presented by Roadway.

Always eager to share the stories of the players, coaches and teams from this important era in baseball and American history, Buck delighted and inspired all of us. He will be terribly missed.
