Jeff Fandrey, a 15-year Roadway employee currently domiciled at our Portland, Oregon service center, found his concern for safety of life-saving importance for two-year-old Aubrie Sandoval.
Fandrey had just left Roadway and was heading home a little after 4 a.m. on August 26 when he spotted a strange looking bundle in the middle of the road. "It just didn't seem right" said Fandrey, so he stopped to investigate.
What he found was certainly a surprise - a little girl in a diaper beneath a red blanket in the middle of the road.
He immediately called 9-1-1. Little Aubrie held onto him and wouldn't let go until her mother arrived. The police canvassed the neighborhood. The toddler's mother was found visiting with nearby grandparents.
Forest Grove Police Chief Glenn VanBlarcom awarded Fandrey a certificate of appreciation and recognized him for going "above and beyond to assist law enforcement and the city."
In the letter that accompanied the certificate, VanBlarcom wrote:
"You showed tenacity in your steadfast approach to investigate what was going on when you saw what appeared to be just a blanket laying in the roadway....
What if you were not paying attention to your driving or just didn't care about debris in the roadway? The results of this event could have turned disastrous."
Congratulations to Jeff on his life-saving and amazing safety accomplishment!
