Four Roadway Drivers Win at State Driving Competition: Al Evans, Ron Dunlap, Mark Hewitt and Jeff Mefford Qualify to Compete at the National Truck Driving Championships [06.13.2007]

Akron, OH--June 13, 2007--Four Roadway drivers placed first in their respective classes at the Ohio state truck driving competition. Al Evans, of Akron, OH won the tanker class; Ron Dunlap of Mercer, PA won the 5-axle class; Mark Hewitt of Lorain, OH won the flatbed class, and Jeff Mefford of Cincinnati won the twins class. These wins qualify each for the 70th Annual National Truck Driving Championships in Minneapolis in August.

Evans is a road driver at the Roadway service center in Copley, OH. He has worked for Roadway since 1984, and won Ohio titles in the tanker class in both 1998 and 2001. Dunlap is a road driver at the Roadway service center in Copley, OH. He has worked for Roadway since 1991, and placed first in the sleeper class in 1998.

Hewitt is a driver account specialist at the Roadway service center in Cleveland, OH. He has worked for Roadway since 1991.

Mefford is pickup and delivery driver at the Roadway service center in Cincinnati, OH. He also was named State Grand Champion and received the highest off-road score of the competition. Mefford has worked for Roadway since 1990.

To participate in state-level competitions, drivers must be accident-free for the 12 months leading up to the event. The state competitions include challenging skills and maneuvering tests on a driving course, a pre-trip inspection, and a written exam on vehicle operation and federal safety regulations.

Winners at the state level will compete at the National Truck Driving Championships event August 21-25 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Approximately 400 drivers from around the country will vie for national titles in their respective vehicle classes. The American Trucking Associations sponsors the event.
