ROADWAY EXPRESS SPONSORS AWARD WINNING VIDEO
WETA Documentary, "Divided Highways" Wins 1997 Peabody Award

AKRON, Ohio -- May 6, 1998 -- Recognizing the fundamental relationship between the trucking industry and the nation's highway system, Roadway Express, Inc. provided major funding to the award-winning documentary "Divided Highways" which has aired on local PBS affiliates since October, 1997. The 90-minute film explores the history, the people and the tremendous impact the nation's highway system has had on our way of life.

According to Mike Wickham, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, it was only natural for Roadway Express to sponsor a film on something that has also had such a great impact on the trucking industry.

"Within our industry, we recognize that trucking would be very different if the Interstate System had not been built," Wickham noted. "During 40 years of highway construction, concepts like product distribution and just-in-time delivery have evolved into a science that greatly benefits producers and consumers. This would be impossible without highways."

The film, by Lawrence R. Hott and Tom Lewis, and produced by WETA, Washington, D.C. and Florentine Films/Hott Productions, was one of only 34 out of 1,300 entries to receive the George Foster Peabody Award, one of broadcast and cable television's most prestigious prizes.

The Peabody Awards will be presented at an all-industry banquet on May 11, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
