FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION RECOGNIZES ROADWAY'S 'NO ZONE' PARTICIPATION

AKRON, Ohio -- March 16, 1998 -- Steve Mattioli, Ohio State Director of the Federal Highway Administration's Office of Motor Carriers presented Michael W. Wickham, President and Chief Executive Officer of Roadway Express, with a plaque on behalf of Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater. The plaque recognizes the Company's participation in the "No Zone" program, and its commitment to public education and highway safety.

Begun in 1994, the "No Zone" initiative targets the motoring public and students who are learning how to drive, educating them on the blind spots surrounding a truck where vehicles cannot be seen by the truck's driver and may restrict the driver's ability to stop or change lanes safely. Roadway Express was the first national motor carrier to work with the U.S. Department of Transportation in bringing this important safety message to the motoring public.

Roadway currently owns three trailers with 48-foot illustrations of where the "No Zones" around a truck are located. The "No Zone" trailers are used by Roadway's Road Teams nationwide to increase and promote safety awareness at schools and special events.
