INLAND HONORS ROADWAY AS TOP LONG-DISTANCE CARRIER

AKRON, Ohio -- April 2, 1998 -- Inland Paperboard and Packaging selected Roadway Express as its top long-distance less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier in 1997 and named Roadway a "Quality Carrier."

Inland, which is headquartered in Indianapolis, has eight paper mills, 40 box plants and 75 shipping locations. Roadway serves all of Inland's facilities nationwide. Every location votes on the award and, for a carrier to be named a "Quality Carrier," the vote must be unanimous. Only eight of approximately 300 carriers that provide service to Inland were named a "Quality Carrier."

"This is a very difficult award to achieve because one dissenting vote from any location disqualifies a carrier," said Della Criswell, Inland distribution analyst. "Roadway's winning the award demonstrates it consistently provides quality service." Inland has presented "Quality Carrier" awards for seven years, and Roadway Express has won the award five times.

"Inland doesn't have one large shipping location, and every location can choose its carriers. This award is a testament to our local customer service teams, which meet or exceed customer expectations across the board, in every community," said Pat Mynesberge, Roadway senior corporate account executive.

Carriers are judged in nine categories including on-time delivery, accurate billing, damage to products and ability to react to emergencies.
