ROADWAY TRACKING SYSTEM WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD [4/28/98]
AKRON, Ohio -- April 28, 1998 -- Roadway Express shipment tracking system was named the Grand Prize winner by the Winter Corporation in its worldwide 1998 VLDB (Very Large Database) Survey Program.
Roadways tracking system allows the carrier and shipper to know precisely where a shipment is at any time, from pick up through delivery. The system processes an average of 650 transactions per second. It won the award for its capacity to execute 1,820 transactions per second during peak periods, which surpassed all survey participants in transactions per second in all environments.
This award acknowledges the world-class tracking system we have developed and its effectiveness, said Pam Kelley, Director - Information Technology for the Akron-based motor carrier. Our system allows us to efficiently and reliably manage a high volume of shipments and provide customers with valuable information about their freight in a very timely manner.
Our award-winning shipment tracking system was engineered in the late 1980s and continues to be enhanced to meet operational requirements and satisfy customer needs as they evolve, Kelley concluded.
The massive databases of our award winners touch the lives of millions of people daily, said Kathy Auerbach, Winter Corporation research program manager. By acquiring knowledge about how these systems evolve and operate, all companies and their customers may benefit.
The VLDB survey program is an annual undertaking by Winter Corporation, a consulting and research firm specializing in large database technology, to identify the worlds largest known commercial databases and to acquire a body of knowledge about the practices and products used to develop and manage them.
