SHIPPERS VOTE ROADWAY BEST LTL CARRIER

AKRON, Ohio - April 6, 1999 - The National Small Shipments Traffic Conference (NASSTRAC) has voted Roadway Express the 1998 LTL Nationwide Carrier of the Year. This award demonstrates Roadway's commitment to providing its customers with consistent and reliable service. Roadway was selected the best in its category, from a field of nationwide, regional or multi-regional less-than-truckload carriers.

The voting members of NASSTRAC are companies that produce and ship goods in LTL quantities. The basis of the award is to recognize superior performance in the LTL field and to encourage LTL carriers to commit to service excellence. The carriers were rated on several performance criteria: innovation in quality service products; electronic-data interface (EDI), satellite tracking and other technology; service performance; loss and damage claims ratios; rating and billing accuracy; and support of the association and its legislative goals.

Michael W. Wickham, Roadway's chairman and chief executive officer accepted the award on April 6, 1999 in Naples, Fla. "It is always gratifying to receive the NASSTRAC Carrier of the Year award," stated Wickham. "It is the only such award that is given based on a broad-based poll of customers. Being the top vote-getter in such a role gives all Roadway people affirmation that our customer-focused approach is recognized and appreciated."

Roadway has won the LTL Carrier of the Year Award for 10 consecutive years, and 11 of the 13 years the award has been given. The Carrier of the Year program is co-sponsored by NASSTRAC and Logistics Management and Distribution Report, a trade magazine for buyers of logistics services.

"Our focus is to ensure that Roadway provides customers the highest value in the industry through reliable, responsive and efficient service," said Michael J. Murphy, senior vice president of corporate sales for Roadway. "We thank the NASSTRAC members for this award and will continue to work hard to retain their trust and confidence."
