AKRON, Ohio -- August 16, 1999 -- Pier 1 Imports (NYSE: PIR) has honored Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) as its '1998 Carrier of the Year' at their third annual logistics partnership meeting in May. Ray Burgett, director of Domestic Transportation, presented the award for Pier 1 Imports to Kevin Wicks, Senior Corporate Account Executive for Roadway out of Dallas, Texas.

Pier 1 Imports is North America's largest specialty retailer of imported decorative home furnishings, gifts and related items with over 800 stores in 48 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Japan. Working with Pier 1, Mark VII, Inc., a third party logistics provider based in Memphis, Tenn. that handles the selection of motor carriers for Pier 1 Imports, selected Roadway as the company to move the retailer's less-than-truckload freight. Mark VII's Special Services division of Scottsdale, AZ manages the Pier 1 Imports' account. Wicks stated, "Roadway, Pier 1 and Mark VII have enjoyed a great relationship over the years. It is gratifying to receive this prestigious award on behalf of Roadway Express."

The carriers were rated on several performance criteria, including on-time delivery service, pricing and flexibility of options for moving their freight. "We feel very honored to receive this award from a valued customer like Pier 1," stated Senior Vice President of Corporate Sales for Roadway, Michael Murphy. "This award is so special because it is voted on by Pier 1's domestic transportation department and its distribution center staff. It gives all Roadway people affirmation that our commitment to meeting and exceeding customer expectations is recognized and appreciated."
