ROADWAY EXPRESS NAMED CARRIER OF THE YEAR

AKRON, Ohio -- October 26, 1999 -- Ryder Integrated Logistics, Inc. of Whitakers, North Carolina named Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) Carrier of the Year for 1999. The award was presented by Don Moore, Operations Manager for Ryder, on September 9, to Roadway employees David Sides, Sales Representative and Gene Bailey, Terminal Manager at the Rocky Mount, NC facility, at the annual Midrange Engine Supplier Conference of Consolidated Diesel Company (CDC).

"Roadway has enjoyed a three-year business relationship with Ryder Integrated Logistics and Consolidated Diesel Co.," stated Sides. "I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of our company. The challenges presented keep us focused on continuous performance enhancement. Receiving this award validates all of the hard work put forth by the Roadway team to meet and exceed customer expectations."

CDC is a joint venture between Cummins and JI Case. They produce over 150,000 diesel engines annually. Ryder Integrated Logistics, provider of inbound logistical services for CDC, selected Roadway as its choice for the award based on the motor carrier's commitment to excellence.

The criteria for the recognition was meeting the delivery window requirements and the number of shipments delivered on time. CDC operates with a 14-48 hour inventory environment and strict 30-minute delivery window. Roadway was 100% on time meeting the delivery window requirements and delivered all shipments 99.2% on time.

"Not only did Roadway Express do an outstanding job of delivering on time, they should be commended for all the personnel at the Rocky Mount terminal," stated Moore. "The 'extra mile' is built into their normal routine."
