ROADWAY EXPRESS RECEIVES SAFETY AWARD FROM TRAILMOBILE
AKRON, Ohio - December 1, 1999 - Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) has been awarded "Overall Best Fleet Safety - August 1998 to August 1999," in a fleet safety contest sponsored by Trailmobile Trailer LLC and the Arizona Motor Transport Association (AMTA).
Kevin Knight, President of AMTA presented the award to Matthew Ryan, executive director - government relations for Roadway, at the Association's annual membership conference award ceremony in Tucson, on October 23. "Safety has always been a high priority of all Roadway employees," said Ryan. "This special accomplishment by our team of drivers and management reinforces that they are the 'Best of the Best' in our industry." In 1998, Roadway experienced its best safety performance in twenty years, surpassing all existing company safety records in each of its major safety categories.
The criteria for earning this award are based on the carrier's Department of Transportation recordable accident frequency between August of 1998 and August of 1999. Both pickup and delivery and linehaul miles are included in the total calculation.
"Roadway earned this award based on our excellent vehicle accident performance while driving in Arizona and for improving our record over last year," stated Mark Sion, district safety manager for Roadway at the Phoenix facility. "Congratulations to the managers and drivers who contributed to this effort."
