Cold-Sensitive Shipments are products that have the potential to freeze during transport, resulting in damage to the product.
2. What is the Cold-Sensitive Shipments program at Roadway?
The Roadway Cold-Sensitive Shipments policy covers products that freeze at or below 35 degrees F./1.5 degrees C. Our Protective Services Policy is designed to safely transport Cold-Sensitive Shipments for participating shippers. The policy utilizes well-established procedures for handling cargo in freezing weather including:
  • Monitoring weather forecasts using AccuWeather
  • Distinct labeling of freight and waybills to easily identify freezable freight
  • Sheltered areas to hold freezables during severe weather condition
  • Procedures for protecting freight while in transit
3. What types of products are shipped as Cold-Sensitive Shipments?
Many types of products qualify as freezables, but not all are included on the Cold-Sensitive Shipments program. Currently Roadway provides freezable service to industries such as chemical and allied products, food and beverage, candy, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and agricultural.
4. When is the Roadway Cold-Sensitive Shipments service available?
Roadway is the only carrier to provide year-round protection on its Cold-Sensitive Shipments program. The primary season runs from September through April.
5. How much does Cold-Sensitive Shipments freight protection cost?
The Roadway Cold-Sensitive Shipments service is free to qualified shippers in the continental United States and for shipments to and from Canada and Mexico. There is a charge for the use of heated trailers for shipments originating and delivering within Canada.
6. How do I get more information or sign-up for the Roadway Cold-Sensitive Shipments program?
